Lessons learned

Sunday, April 1, 2012

This is the first fleece I ever purchased. It was a greasy raw Romney fleece. I purchased it sight unseen through a phone call from my sister who had gone to a fiber fair and met an extremely nice lady. I learned a lot from that first purchase. I wanted to create yarns from a chemically free standpoint so I decided that I would wash all my fleeces via the suint fermentation method. Let me just say, never wash too much fleece at one time. I felted half of this fleece and ended up using it as stuffing for a dog pillow which the dog decided he'd rather eat than sleep on. Although now that I've washed 20 more fleeces, I have to say that this fleece had issues before I got my hands on it.

The next two raw fleeces I purchased were Shetland and unfortunately they were not skirted and I paid for poop! It didn't take long for me to realize that paying a little extra for good quality fleece saves in labor and frustration on my part. Now I get my fleeces from a great lady, Martha McGrath at Deer Run Sheep Farm. Her Coopworth fleeces are amazing and well worth every penny.
